Hobbit Moments Podcast episode 2 is now available!

I’m very pleased to say that my second podcast is now available on podcast.hobbitmoments.com and on iTunes.

With barely concealed hunger, your host Milo Broadbelt invites chef and author of a forthcoming book of recipes based on The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and all Middle-earth, Heath Dill, for a cosy fireside chat about all things food.

Heath Dill has a Kickstarter project on the go to create his cookbook, called “Medium rare and back again” and you can be a part of it with the links below.

Enjoy this varied conversation about Tolkien, food and cooking by 2 folk who clearly love their food!

Day 311 - making warmth in the kitchen

Falling leaves, dropping temperatures, shorter days…..how can sensible folk not think of making soup? In my little smial, autumn always has me longing for soup. Cooking can be almost as fun as eating.

Favourite sausages, rich and herby, carrots, savoy cabbage, swede, potatoes, onions straight from the farm shop, tomatoes and a mix of herbs and spices that I’ll keep as secret as S. Gamgee, esquire. Lots to chop and clean and prepare and all of it a pleasure and an anticipation

Fry the sausages, then simmer it all together, long and slow. Thick, chunky, hearty, warming and tasty. Serve in a hand thrown bowl with an ale the colour of deepest amber to accompany it. Bliss.

Day 261 - a long dreaded party

Perhaps you’d all like to come for tea at 4 o’clock? There’s cake enough for everyone, and tarts and trifles. The kettle will be on of course!

Feel free to bring your instruments but leave any harps in the porch. All hoods to be left on hooks, but theres no need to bring any spares - I’ve had quite enough of adventures, thank you very much!

Remember, 4 o’clock sharp now!

Day 205 - Tea time

I am inordinately fond of my little local bakery. Sitting barely a mile up the hill from home its a place packed with tempting delights. I couldn’t resist bringing these creamy, fruity, strawberry tarts home with me today. Perfect for a hobbit tea….

Day 150 - warmth and comfort

Heavy skies, rain that feels like it just won’t stop, biting winds…..its as if spring turned up early, then disappeared early and left winter behind once more. If the shire wants to pretend its not May now then so can I!

Time for some comforting cooking. Dice up some good beef, some fresh onions. Keep the spices subtle. Brown them off quickly, de-glaze the pan with some stock, into the pot with the potatoes and carrots. Cook it long and slow on the stove. Good ingredients, simple fayre, no need to add anything fancy. Serve it up for dinner with a mug of good ale.

Blow wind, rain all you like….its warm and comforting inside and I have food to match.
